In honor of National Caramel Day, Cheryl's Caramels brings you this brief education on the yummy nuggets... The chewy caramel that we know and love today is a recent invention. Americans began making sugary syrups in the 1600s, but the delicious chewy caramel did not come about until much later. Caramel candy emerged during the 18th century and quickly became one of the most popular sweets on the market in the United States. Milton Hershey’s first business did not have Hershey in its title. It was called the Lancaster Caramel Company. What is caramel? Caramel is a beige to dark-brown confectionery product made by heating any of a variety of sugars.
